About books

Jibun no Nihongo is neither a textbook nor a workbook.
We refer to it as “the infrastructure for learning Japanese.”
Use it just like you would water or electricity—for all kinds of applications.

Various studies estimate that the average adult native speaker of Japanese has a vocabulary of around 30,000 words.

This book, Finding My Japanese, comes with an extensive set of digital Japanese language data. It includes 32,000 words, approximately 2,000 phrases, 1,300 sentence patterns, and 1,500 fixed expressions. It also covers around 3,000 kanji characters. By comparison, the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test requires knowledge of up to 2,000 kanji, and in reality, even native Japanese speakers can confidently write only a little over 1,000 characters.

In other words, this list covers almost the entire range of expressions used by contemporary native speakers of Japanese.

These data are provided in spreadsheet format.
In the 2020s, spreadsheets are freely available and can comfortably handle around 40,000 rows, even on an average computer or smartphone.

This is where AI comes in.
To make effective use of AI, structured language data like this is essential.
The integration of spreadsheets and AI has progressed rapidly.

自分の日本語とは？

自分の日本語　は、教科書でも問題集でもありません。私達は、これを「日本語学習のインフラ」と呼んでいます。水や電気のように、いろんなことに使ってください。

日本語ネイティブの大人の平均的な語彙数はいろんな研究がありますが、だいたい3万語前後ではないかと言われています。

この自分の日本語には日本語のデジタルデータが付属しています。語は32000、句が約2000、構文は1300。決まり文句が1500あります。漢字は約3000字。日本語能力試験の最高難度の試験では漢字は2000字まで。実は日本語ネイティブが自信を持って書けるのは1000字ちょっとです。

つまり、このリストは、現代の日本語ネイティブが使う日本語の表現のほぼすべてをカバーしています。

これらのデータは、スプレッドシートで配付しています。2020年代に入り、スプレッドシートは、無料で手に入りますし、4万行くらいまでなら、平均的なパソコンやスマホで問題なく動かせるようになっています。

そして、AIの登場です。AIを活用するには、これら日本語のデータが必要です。スプレッドシートとAIの融合は進んでおり、例えば「よく使われる語と構文で、床屋で必要な語彙リストと会話例を作って」と頼めば、すぐに作ってくれます。付属の自分の日本語リストは、使われる頻度で4段階、学習の難易度などで5段階にタグがふられていますから、AIの活用に最適です。

書籍ではスプレッドシートの使い方の基本から、AIと日本語のリストを使ったカスタマイズの方法を学べます。

About Translation

The multilingual translation edition was created through the following steps.

The original Japanese edition (140,000 characters) was rewritten into a simplified 40,000-character version for Japanese language learners.

The simplified manuscript was further rewritten to be English-friendly, then translated into English using the paid course of Plamo Translation, which currently has one of the best reputations.From the English text, translations into multiple languages were produced using the paid version of ChatGPT (ChatGPT 5.1). The text was divided into appropriate lengths, a translation-protocol set was created, and the work was carried out accordingly.

Using AI for translation was extremely challenging. In reality, it is impossible to fully verify whether the translations are correct. I implemented various mechanisms to prevent omissions, but I cannot claim the results are perfect.

However, since I have been publishing Japanese books in multiple languages since 2010, I also know that it is impossible to recover the 200,000 yen translation fee even for an English edition. In other words, unless a book becomes a global bestseller, publishing multilingual editions is not feasible.With AI translation, it becomes possible. Although few people in the education field support this approach, I decided to try it anyway. Some minor issues likely remain. English sometimes appears where it shouldn’t, and there seem to be missing translations as well.

This book does not explain Japanese grammar or structure, so it does not contain fatal errors in its Japanese explanations. It is mostly an explanation of how to use Google Spreadsheets and an overview of the Japanese data. Even if there are slight translation issues, they should not interfere with Japanese language learning.

This book simply provides materials for studying foreign languages using AI and explains how to use those materials. The concept behind this book is groundbreaking. Even if it requires extra effort, I believe there is great value in publishing it in many languages.
I hope this book reaches everyone who is interested in the Japanese language.

翻訳について

自分の日本語ネイティブ版を、学習者向けにリライトした原稿を有料版Plamo Translationで英訳。

その後、英語テキストを基に、有料版ChatGPT（ChatGPT 5.1～5.2）を用いて多言語翻訳を生成。テキストを適切な長さに分割し、翻訳プロトコルセットを作成した上で作業を実施しました。

翻訳の正確性を完全に検証することは不可能です。抜け落ちを防ぐための様々な仕組みを実装しましたが、結果が完璧だとは断言できません。

2010年から日本語書籍を多言語で出版してきた経験から、英語版であっても20万円の翻訳費を回収することは不可能だと理解しています。つまり、書籍が世界的ベストセラーにならない限り、多言語版出版は現実的ではないのです。しかし、AI翻訳によってこれが可能になりました。教育分野でこの手法を支持する人はほとんどいませんが、それでも試みることにしました。細かい問題は残っており、英語が不自然に混入したり、翻訳漏れも出ることがあります。

しかし、本書は日本語の文法や構造を解説するものではないため、日本語説明に致命的な誤りは含まれません。主にGoogleスプレッドシートの活用法と日本語データの概要を説明した本ですので、多少の翻訳上の問題があっても、日本語学習の妨げにはならないはずです。

本書は単にAIを用いた外国語学習教材を提供し、その活用方法を解説するものです。このコンセプトは画期的であり、多少の手間がかかっても多言語で出版する価値は大きいと考えています。日本語に興味を持つ全ての方々に、本書が届くことを願っています。
